BIG week for me. Thursday marks the end of a year of Thursday nights in the Limestone Lounge at Bryan's on 4th in Waterloo (the Blue Band plays a Last Goodbye show in Grinnell next Thurs., so someone should bring CAKE this week to celebrate the one year anniversary) Friday is the makeup date for the Live To 9 show that was rained out in June. It's currently the last Blue Band date scheduled for the Cedar Valley this Last Goodbye Tour year. (we've got open dates for Holiday parties) It'll be kind of a dress rehearsal for the Fair, with a FOUR piece horn section and two drummers, Sturgis Park (the Ice House Museum) 6-9pm. And then, Saturday, THEE BIGGY: Iowa State Fair, 14 piece band, two shows, 7- 9pm MidAmerican stage. See yas at ALL THREE!!

Turns out Larry the Band Truck needed not one, not two, but THREE U-Joints (that's one long drive shaft!) It does drive and handle much better after 6 new tires, an alignment and U-joint replacement, but it'll take awhile to pay for this one! See yas Thursday in Marion 6-9pm, Friday in Clear Lake 7-10:30p, and Sat. at Terrill Park in Manchester 5-8p.

Preface: This is my email reply to a kind note Bob sent me today. It is also long, but has lots of true Blue Band fandom! Wow Bob! You never cease to amaze. While always a class act, you have never written me this kind of email and I am most grateful and glad you wrote. Thank you! Am elated to say I am well. Have thought about writing you many times. Also, I have been writing 'thank you' notes to everyone on my trip. (Just got notes sent to Jerry and Danny last night. Really.) Another reason I have not written is because there is so much I want to say. (This is a long email and it does not even scratch the surface.) Also, since I thought about both, posting a Blue Note or emailing you, now is the time to write you and so I shall do both tonight. You are right. Of course, I wanted to stay and talk with you after the show. Two natural, peaceful flowing things circumvented that. It was time to be with Jerry and Danny because, just as with being you and the band, my time with them was like a super nova. Wonderfully bright yet ever so brief. Speaking of super, Doug (?), the bassist made it a point to say 'hi'. It was gloriously over-the-top when I heard him say, "It is a thrill to be standing between Bob and Jeff." That was one of the nicest things I ever heard anyone say about you guys. (Who are these guys?) The other consideration is that I was reminded of an Osmond Bros song "Life is hard enough without goodbyes." Not running. Instead, like a passing parade, I am in a constant state of 'hello' and dare to dream that is kinda sorta what it's like in heaven. (FYI: This was my farewell tour to Iowa with the exception of one or two possible rays of hope remaining.) Finally, the first time I saw Paul McCartney say at the end of the show, "We'll see you next time!" I thought it was the perfect thing to say, especially because right then and there, with affirmation to every cell of my being, I knew I wanted to see him again. (I did. A total of 5 times. Once was on my 51st BD, which has proven to be one of the Top 5 days of my life! Ultimately, Ottumwa and my entire three major city road trip, everything - the flow of life was blessed beyond. There was not one molecule or vibe out of place at any time during my vacation. Later, I realized that there was one thing I missed saying to your faces. "I love you Bob, Jeff,*** Sheryl, and Lucinda. (It was/is always a heartfelt honor to dance with her that it now feels like a life-time achievement award to have danced with her. She has such a brilliantly cool and unique style. She is the "Best Blue Buddy" I ever met. Her sister Gwen joining in? The more the merrier! Alas, I forgot to say "Hi!" to Dennis. (I did let my applause do the talking.) Anyway, I was able to give you, Jeff and Sheryl hugs. That was a first and done because I would have regretted it if I had not, and I have learned it is best not to live with regret. Besides, my dancing shoes had to pay their dues. THANK YOU for sharing that the people in Ottumwa enjoyed the cake, and that it could bring a smile the next night. Was glad I did not frost it. No need for processed sugar. Plus, since "See ya later..." was my first Blue Band song, It was heaven-sent that I thought of putting that on the cake. Your reaction was priceless! Thanks for the memory! As I said, there is so much I want to say. Oh well. Will still be in touch - listening in, maybe send a Beatles Medley (I feel like I am running out of ideas), Back Tracks 'listener suggestions' and the occasional email or a miracle out of nowhere. Speaking of miracles, it was no minor miracle that you safely did 25 gigs in 32 days and for 36 years on the road...with Iowa drivers and farm equipment!! Good for you! ("Use your d*** turn signals!") Will be thinking you at the State Fair (on a stick) as well as off and on until NYE. Been at two hours at this (I type slow), so I quit here...for now. In closing, as you sang on that first "See you later.." I heard from Real time/Bar Time, "That's all. Goodbye." Truest Blue through and through, Paul ***You gotta admit that 'got jeff?' idea that ended up on the towel was a hip ending and nod to our 30 years. Jeff is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. (In the top 10-15?) Glad I could show him even a glimpse of my appreciation. Carolyn is right. You have lived a charmed life. Having Jeff always by your side is evidence to that fact. A joy to know you are always appreciative. Sent from my iPaulMcCartney

Wow. Thanks for the nice words, Dennis! StreetFest was a fantastic day for me. I'm glad you got to be part of it. Hey Bob.... Saw you last night at The Bix Fest. Great show....no surprise there.....really happy you performed mostly originals! I bought the 331/3 vinyl, and The Last Goodbye cd. I've been listening to you on KUNI since 1986, and first saw you at the first MVBFest in '85. I've seen you live a few times....not nearly enough! My wife and I are making plans to see you Jan 13 with Duke Tomato. I've seen the Duke....he's great too!!!!! I have about 4-5 Blue Band CDs and bought one at your last Bix Fest show. I may be your biggest 'unknown fan' . Thanks for a lot of years of great radio and live shows. You and the old KFMH opened up my eyes to the fact that there is much better music beyond AM Top 40. Keep rockin', brother!!!!!!! And...I LOVE the blues!!!!!! Dennis Jones Davenport, Iowa

So Larry The Band Truck failed his DOT inspection because THE STEEL BELTS ON THE TWO FRONT TIRES ARE SHOWING THROUGH THE ENTIRE CIRCUMFERENCE of the inner tread. I took my chances to drive it to Clear Lake and it made it home. I'm not going to press my good luck with it today, so I thought I'd let you know that it will be a VERY scaled down sound system that will fit in Vanna and Jeff's car for this evening's Wayne McCracken Memorial Show in Des Moines. The show must go on! Grace United Methodist Church 3700 Cottage Grove (outside) 7-8:30p. We'll figure out how to pay for the mandated SIX new tires ($1022) sometime soon!

We did it. I knew we could. Ten one-nighters in eleven days, 1312 miles (and 3 of those were at home for me) Four different drummers (including me, twice) Four different horn players, one guitar player (without Jeff, I wouldn't have an act) and one bass player (unbelievable effort and sacrifice from Doug who worked his day job and still made EVERY gig) I am SO proud of the work and effort put in by the people I work with in order to live up to the 36 year legacy of excellence The Blue Band has delivered, and will deliver, right up to the end. Thank you Blue Banders everywhere. Now, on to 4 one-nighters in a row, starting with Bryan's on 4th for Thursday Blues Night, the last time at Ottumwa Live @5 on Friday, The Cedar Boomers party on Saturday and the return of BlueMississippi, Sunday afternoon at Tabor Home Winery in Baldwin. Rock me, babies.

I'm experiencing some frustration at not being able to get the latest Blue Note delivered to the 800 people on the email list, FYI, here it is: Well color me embarrassed (any shade of blue'ill do) I have heard from quite a few people in the last week, wondering about The Blue Notes. I looked it up. It's been THIRTEEN WEEKS since the last one! YIKES! I've got lots of excuses. Most of the them are lame. Many of them have to do with being Facebookaholic. It seems so much easier to get the word out about Blue Band happenings with three or four posts a week. Bob Dorr and The Blue Band has about 2400 followers on FB. Please join us. HowEVAH, I know many people on this e-list want nothing to do with Facebook. I wish I had your resolve. It eats up HOURS of my day. I'll do better at getting you The News… Except maybe the next 5 weeks. The Last Goodbye Tour plus the successes of the small, splinter groups, has Jeff Petersen and me doing 25 one-nighters in 35 days, starting with The Blue Band's last Sturgis Falls Days show. Being part of this hometown festival for all these years has meant the world to me. We have based in Cedar Falls for the band's entire 36 year run. This year, we're the last band on the last day (Sun. 7pm, Gateway Park) Cedar Falls Cable TV Division is video recording the show. Because of copyright laws, we've been asked to keep it as much original material as possible. We're only scheduled to play until 9pm. I'm hoping we can play a little longer, as we've got way more original songs than will fit into two hours! And then, if you'd like to catch some of the 3 hours of cover songs we do, please join us next Friday (6/30, 5:30-9:30p) at the Waterloo Center For The Arts RiverLoop Amphitheater. This is a spectacular venue over looking the Cedar River. Without any recording going on, we'll be free to play anything from our catalog. I'm sure we can play your request if you write it down on a $20 bill and give it to the bandleader…I have also been known to being bribed with CAKE! The whole manic month has a run of 10 full gigs in 11 days, starting in Hills IA and including stops in Williamsburg, West Des Moines, Osceola, Waterloo, Des Moines, Marshalltown and Dubuque (that's brutal for a man my age. Who books this band anyway??) Here's the schedule: https://www.theblueband.com/shows We hope to see you many times on the last drive down the Blue Highway. And a quick heads-up: The Hilton Garden Inn-Johnston and The Blue Band have decided that 250 tickets will be the limit for The Last Goodbye New Year's Eve Party and The Riverside Casino and Hotel, the site of the Last Last Last Goodbye weekend announced that they'll be having a large regional pool tourney at that hotel the same weekend (Jan. 12/13, 2018) If you're planning on attending that landmark weekend and want to stay at the hotel, maybe make your reservation soon: http://www.riversidecasinoandresort.com/ Since we talked last (13 weeks, really?) Last Goodbye shirts and buttons have come out and be sure to check out the "Evolution of The Last Goodbye" cd. It's 4 takes of Jeff's signature song, the original 1983 studio take, a Live at FB & Co.-Waubeek take from 1995, the 25th Anniversary take at Iowa Public Television, and a live version from last year's Bowlful of Blues Fest. Sixteen Blue Band alumni are on at least one of those takes! There's only a few hundred of these, they're only $3, free if you spend $25 on merch (two shirts) I must admit, The Last Goodbye Tour is an emotional roller coaster for me. It's affording me exactly what I had hoped: an opportunity to play these iconic Blue Band tunes in front of so many people that have been so vital to our successes all across our state, one last time. That makes me very happy. To think that I'll sing Madness On Main Street for the last time at Sturgis Falls Days or The Sundown Lounge, or the Dubuque Arboretum, or the Davenport Street Fest or The Iowa State Fair this summer, makes me sad. And THAT'S the Blues, Baby!… We are taking bookings right up to the end and would love to play all those Blue Christmas songs for your holiday gathering. We still have prime dates open Oct.-Jan. 13: https://www.theblueband.com/book-band See ya on The Blue Highway (we'll be crisscrossing the state for about 6 more months) Rub yer washboard to the tune of The Summertime Blues, remember that strawberry shortCAKE is an appropriate summertime band treat, and always know that we love you. Hello Blue Buddies! I do not often visit the Blue Band site, but I had to drop a line to say thanks to all the Iowa folks who sat on their duffers with arms crossed for the last 30 years so I/we could get up and dance unimpeded. Their dancing shoes missed paying their dues when they did not get up and groove to one of the best and most underrated bands in the US. As Bob Dorr so often sang, "You know I shouldn't have to beg you to dance dance dance!" No equivocation or 'simulation stimulation' there. That said, 'this old fool' will rejoice that there is 'no money down' to see the band. While I will be be sad when Jeff bids us 'the last goodbye', all the more I will 'not fade away' and shall be sure to 'shake, rattle and roll.' Truly an indicator that this summer is 'group drink time.' Thank you Bob, Jeff, Sam (and his big organ), Nathan, The Chief, Heath Alan, Al, Ellery (?) et al and all the people I danced with over the years (especially Lucinda) for more memorable times than I can count. I hope to see you this summer. Until then, may all of you be safe on the Blue Highway to Biggsville for the Really Big Pig Gig! "See ya later, Alligator!" Yours Bluely and still True Blue, Paul

Walt and Nancy at the Spirit of Dubuque Riverboat have worked tirelessly for many years to maintain a locally owned/operated tourist business. They have always been fantastic to us with yearly Blues Cruises. Today, a national company made them an offer they couldn't refuse. The boat was sold, the purchasing company is not interested in carrying on the tradition, so it is with profound sadness that we must tell you there will NOT be a Last Goodbye Blues Cruise on June 2. If you purchased tickets, a full refund is available to you wherever you purchased them.

I absolutely LOVE my association with Iowa Public Radio. This week's Thursday Night Blues Night in the Limestone Lounge at Bryan's on 4th (320 E. 4th, Waterloo) is an IPR Listener Appreciation Night, celebrating IPR's successful fundraiser (and Friends President Denny McCabe's birthday) and hoping to add a few more dollars to the programming fund. The oral surgeon says no harp playing for one more week, so jammers, I need some more help in covering the solos. I'll also have blues CDs for giveaways and donations and Bryan has some surprises too. There is no cover charge, so we'll pass the hat for the cause. Get Limestoned 7-10p.

This sad saga is getting a little old. The oral surgeon confirmed that the hole left by my tooth extraction two weeks ago is not healing and has opened into my sinuses. He's given me a new regimen to follow, but it includes the old advice not to play harmonica. I'm beginning to feel useless at the jams, but my fellow bandmates continue to encourage me to come and play drums and sing a few songs. So jammers, I need your help (again) at Tuesday's Parlor City Jam in Cedar Rapids and Thursday Blues Night at Bryan's on 4th in Waterloo. Both nights 7-10p. I'm still holding out hope for enough healing in the next 5 days to play a little harp with The Blue Band in Greenfield on Saturday.

Sometimes it's just weird. This is the first year that I haven't worked with a hotel on New Year's Eve in 30+ years. The Artisan's Sanctuary is a non-profit (503c) organization that provides space and support to a variety of arts activities. I think it's cool that we're helping raise some money for rent/restoration/supplies with a portion of your ticket price. The evacuation process of Czech Village during the fall flood resulted in losing some chairs and tables. Czech Village Assoc. has helped replace some, but we've only been able to locate about 100. We're expecting 150 people. SO (this is the weird part) if you're helping us usher in the new Blue year, and you have a favorite lawn/concert chair, bring it with you when you come!

Happy BLUE Year, procrastinators! It has been pointed out (more than once) that the weather and the fact that Christmas was on a Sunday, with many businesses closed on Monday, has combined to make getting advance tickets to the Happy Blue Year XXXV a bit of a challenge. SO, we have decided to extend the advance ticket price ($50) thru Tuesday, 12/27. Tickets will DEFINITELY be $60 starting Dec. 28. The Artisan's Sanctuary or Village Meat Market/Cafe has tickets. Artisan's also has an on-line option: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bob-dorrs-happy-blue-year-35-t… If you like the variations of the blues played by Iowa Hall of Famers. This is your party!

Mr. Dorr, My name is Nathan Arndt and I am the Curator at the UNI Museum in Cedar Falls. I am currently putting together an exhibit looking at the development of Rock n' Roll in Iowa including the importance of the ballrooms, recording studios, radio stations, and bands. One of the bands I would like to feature is yours. Being a local group and a well known name across the state, I would like to feature you as one of the key bands in the 80's. We will feature a write-up of the band and will play your music in that section of the exhibit. I would also like to include some memorabilia from the band itself but have not been able to track any down. If you are interested in this, I would like to meet with you to talk about this history of the band beyond what you have on your webpage and may record a video statement from you about the importance of the band to the state. I also wanted to ask if you had anything that you would be willing to loan the museum over the next year to be featured in the exhibit. I appreciate your time and any help you could give. Thanks, Nathan Arndt Nathan Arndt Curator, UNI Museum University of Northern Iowa Office:(319) 273-6922 Cell: (515) 339-2291

We have a cd put together by a deceased friend. It has a song we can't identify . It's a male singer and the lyrics include "it's all right in here" " and " the place you left in such a mess" and you'll think by now I've used up all the questions". . I know this is not much to go on but can you help us identifying this song. It's making us crazy. Thanks
Rita

Added a couple more dates to the 35th Anniversary Tour schedule (REALLY happy to be invited back to the Indie HS Jazz Camp Concert!) Here's a surprise: We're going back into the recording studio next week, hoping to have some new tunes to be released by June 1. Until then, enjoy a few tunes from New Year's Eve 2015: https://www.theblueband.com/music

Dear Bob, It was great to see all of you at the Marriott last night for the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony! And congratulations to Jeff, who spoke in a humble and moving way about his family, his friends, his career and musical deeds. Jeff, your speech may have made you nervous, but I haven't heard a better one. I met you and Bob on Aug. 24th, 1979. I was 24, and I'm 60 now. As a fan, over the past 36 years, I've enjoyed watching, listening, and dancing as you both have survived and thrived! And, of course, it's still" too late to stop now!" Pete

What a fantastic weekend for The Blue Band, started by today's invitation to play the Iowa State Fair on August 20th, (thank you Tonya Cook!) Friday's induction of Jeff into the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame, and Saturday's inclusion in the Central Iowa Blues Society's Winter Blues Fest. Call me honey butter, cuz we are on a roll!

Dear Bob, Thanks for your phone call yesterday. I'm not going to work today or tomorrow. Today it's too cold and Tuesday it will be too cold with snow on top of it. That said, it's winter in Iowa, and all we can do is live through it. Stay warm! Pete
